Memphis has a high rate of poverty. Thirty-five percent of children live in poverty, as do 14 % of adults over 65. The poverty rate for Blacks is 26%, second to the poverty rate of Hispanic/Latinos at 29%. BCCM exists to address the underlying causes of poverty. We engage with community members and leaders to determine what is needed to address issues limiting or prohibiting collective community growth and progress.

BCCM is committed to promoting programs and policies within three critical categories: 1) economic empowerment, 2) civic engagement, and 3) criminal justice reform that reduce and mitigate the consequences of the uneven and inequitable distribution of material resources and wealth.
